Wantage Town

Wantage Town Football Club was founded in 1892 and has been at the heart of football in the town for well over a century. The club initially competed in the Swindon & District League, enjoying early success by winning the Swindon Advertiser Cup in both the 1903–04 and 1907–08 seasons, as well as securing the league title in 1907–08. In 1909, Wantage became a founder member of the North Berks Football League. Following the First World War, the club shared the North Berkshire League title in 1919–20 with
Abingdon Town and Long Wittenham, before winning the championship outright two seasons later. During this period, the Freds also won the North Berks Cup in both 1920 and 1921, as well
as the league championship in 1921–22. After a short spell in the Reading & District League, where success proved elusive, the club returned to the Swindon & District League and won the title again in 1933–34.

The 1950s marked one of the most successful eras in the club's history. Wantage won the league championship in 1952–53 without losing a match and repeated the achievement in 1955–56. The 1954–55 season was particularly memorable, with the Freds winning five cup competitions, including the prestigious Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup. Since joining the Hellenic League in 1956, Wantage have spent the majority of their history in the Premier Division. The club's highest Premier Division finish was third place, achieved in 1973–74, 1982–83 and 1993–94. Promotion from Division One was secured on six occasions: as runners up in 1969–70, 1987–88, 1991–92 and 1995–96, and as champions in 1980–81 and 2003–04. The 1991–92 campaign also saw the club set a record of 32 matches unbeaten. The 2003–04 season ranks among the most successful in the club's history. The First Team won Hellenic League Division One East to regain Premier Division status, while the Reserve Team also finished top of their league and earned promotion. The Reserves repeated their success in 2004–05 by winning the Reserve Division One title. Meanwhile, the First Team consolidated their position in the Premier Division with a tenth-place finish. The Freds reached another significant milestone in 2010–11 by winning the Hellenic Premier Division title. However, despite the efforts of the club's management and volunteers, promotion to the Southern League was denied due to ground grading requirements. The necessary
improvements were completed ahead of the 2012–13 season, but a strong Marlow side prevented promotion as Wantage finished runners-up.

Success finally arrived in 2013–14 when the club won the Uhlsport Hellenic Premier Division title. With the required ground grading in place, Wantage secured promotion to Division One South & West of the Southern League. The Reserve Team also earned promotion as runners-up, while the ‘A’ Team achieved promotion from the North Berks League to Hellenic League Division Two West. Despite a turbulent start to the 2014–15 season, which included a change of First Team management and the departure of several key players, the club retained its Southern League status. The Allied Youth Team also enjoyed success by winning the Allied Counties Cup. Wantage remained in the Southern League for three seasons before relegation back to the Hellenic League at the end of the 2016–17 campaign. The club quickly bounced back, winning the Uhlsport Hellenic Premier Division title for a third time in 2018–19 and earning promotion to
Southern League Division One Central. The Reading Senior Cup was also won in both 2017–18 and 2018–19.

The following two seasons were severely disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and were not completed. At the conclusion of the 2021–22 season, the club was relegated back to the Hellenic Premier Division and finished tenth in 2022–23. The 2023–24 season marked the beginning of a rebuilding process for the First Team. While the campaign ultimately resulted in relegation from the Hellenic Premier Division to Division One, it
laid the foundations for future progress. The 2024–25 season began slowly but a strong run of form propelled the Freds into the play-offs, where they narrowly missed promotion after defeat
in the final. The 2025–26 season followed a similar pattern. After a difficult start, the team embarked on a lengthy unbeaten run and finished second in the league. However, their promotion hopes ended with defeat in the play-off semi-final, meaning the club remained in Hellenic League Division One for the 2026–27 season.

Throughout its history, Wantage Town FC has continually invested in improving its facilities at
Alfredian Park. The ground was purchased outright in 1922 for the princely sum of £500. Floodlights were installed in 1996, followed by new stands in 2012. In 2015, the club reintroduced its Women's Team, and in 2020 the club merged with its junior section to create a unified football structure. Today, football is offered to players of all abilities and genders, from Under-7 level through to senior football. In recent years to support the club's continued growth, Wantage secured the use of additional facilities, including St Mary's Field behind the clubhouse, adjacent school playing fields, and a further site at Tugwell. Significant infrastructure improvements were completed in the summer of 2024, including new home and away changing rooms, a refurbished officials' changing room, a first aid room, and a fully accessible disabled shower facility, partly funded by the Premier League Stadium Fund. In the summer of 2025, the club completed one of the most ambitious projects in its history. The
main grass pitch was transformed into a state-of-the-art Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP), accompanied by new floodlights, dugouts and perimeter fencing. The facility became the first community football AGP within the Vale of White Horse District and was primarily funded through support from the Football Foundation, the Premier League Stadium Fund and Section 106 funding.
Today, the AGP serves players across all sections of the club and is also used extensively by community groups and commercial partners, ensuring Alfredian Park remains a focal point for
football and community activity in Wantage for generations to come.

In January 2026, the club further expanded its facilities by assuming management of the Kingsgrove sports pavilion and pitches in Wantage. The development features a modern pavilion
with four changing rooms, accessible facilities, multiple grass pitches and a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA). This important addition has significantly increased the club’s capacity to support
its growing junior section, enabling the creation of new teams and enhancing player development opportunities and progression pathways across all age groups. The acquisition of Kingsgrove
reinforces Wantage Town FC’s commitment to delivering high-quality facilities, fostering participation, and providing a clear football pathway for players of all ages and abilities within the
local community.
